CHAKRA MAPPING

There are 8 Chakras or energy vortexes in the human body according to yogic thought. The first seven are associated with specific locations within the human body and the eighth is considered the aura; a combination of them all.  The chakras correspond to various glands in the endocrine system which are in charge of producing, regulating and distributing hormones throughout the body.

Balancing and understanding the energies of the chakras is a basic component of healing and nurturing in the yogic system. In the Intravision Project, experiencing, intuiting and recording the movement of the chakras is a fundamental tool of self-awareness and can give people the experience the overlap of art and yoga.

Much like mapping a country, we first trace our physical boundaries and then articulate the patterns of energy within it. The chakras are like major cities within the country; the energy centers from which all else radiates. The chakras are operating on many levels. On the physical/scientific level, each corresponds with an endocrine gland. On a quantum level, each corresponds with a vibration or density of energy which correlates to the elements or the tattwas. On an emotional level, each corresponds to a manifestation of feeling. And on an aesthetic level, each has a sound, color and vibratory pattern.

So when I speak of "chakra mapping", I am inviting you to create an art piece which may be a deep exploration into the energy, emotions and self-hypnotic visions you may experience as the result of certain yoga practices performed prior to the art exercise. If doing physical yoga exercises is the quickest way to discipline the mind, then it's also the quickest way to open you up to experiencing you as you really are. It is an opportunity for you to create a transformative artwork which stems from a meditative state.  It is a perfect starting point for the practice of artistic self-awareness.
